Doesn't Anyone Ever Read This Stuff?

Grandpa John may not be brilliant at Greek but he can at least tell the difference between "tongue" (glossa γλῶσσα) and "knowledge" (gnosis γνῶσις).

Terror and Destruction

Human beings are destructive. Biologically speaking, plants construct, animals destroy. Plants build, taking raw energy from the sun (or some other source like a black smoker) and turn it into carbon based life. Animals take what plants have built and use it to make activity, more animal, and waste. Humans have risen above the animal level, denying the roots from which they have sprung, to become creators and builders. Unfortunately they give little or no thought to the process as a whole in their need to seek a short term outcome.

Important Point #1

What could Hitchens be overlooking? Grandpa John thinks he has failed to note the difference between religion and faith.

Does Religion Poisin Everything?

Grandpa John periodically receives a copy of the University of Waterloo Magazine. He noticed that the fall 2011 edition has an article on page 6 concerning a debate between Barry Brummet and Christopher Hitchens in which the latter, author of God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, is quoted as saying that the idea there should or could be an absolute moral authority is very repulsive.

A Matter of Energy, lightly treated

Grandpa John was wondering why the constant in matter to energy conversion should be the square of the speed of light. Why is the k in Einstein's e=mk a c^2 instead of plain c or G or h^2 or some other value. Why c squared?

Rabbit Wars

Grandma has started a garden again this year. Her Swiss Chard which has pride of place was cropped to the ground by a deceptively attractive young bunny. Not only was the Swiss Chard desecrated, but a bean plant also fell prey and a number of emerging seedlings were under threat. Her ire provoked, Grandma promptly recruited Grandpa John to deal with this emergency and provide protection for her precious greenery. Rabbit 2, Grandma 0.

Caveat Viator (Traveller Beware)

Grandma recently felt the need of a holiday and decided to purchase an online deal for an overnight stay in Niagara Falls. Since she frequently entertains guests from the UK and suborns Grandpa John as a tour guide and head of transportation, he has often been entertained by the delights of this metropolis. Moreover, this is at least the third time Grandma has been drawn to the lure of the local natural wonder for an independent visit despite her distaste for casinos. In case you also feel the urge and are enticed by one of those incredibly cheap overnight stays loaded with vouchers that make it look almost free, there are a few things you ought to know.
